| History of the Klamath Tribes The Klamath Tribes consists of three tribes: the Klamath, Modoc, and Yahooskin Bands of Snake Indians. The Tribes claimed the east slopes of the Cascades and the adjoining desert areas from the Deschutes River headwaters in the north to Mount Shasta in California to the south. Tribal lifestyle was hunting & gathering. The Klamath people were placed on a 1.1 million acre reservation in the 1860's; encroachments later led to the infamous "Modoc War" of 1873. The Klamath were subsequently terminated in 1954 by the US Government. After many years of persistent lobbying, tribal leaders were finally able to have this termination revoked through passage of PL 99-398, the Klamath Indian Tribe Restoration Act, in August 1986. The population is distributed as follows: approximately 38% in the Chiloquin area, 11% in Beatty and 51% in the Klamath Falls Area. "We are the Klamath Tribes, the Klamaths, the Modocs and the Yahooskin. We have lived here, in he Klamath Basin of Oregon, from time beyond memory. Our legends and oral history tell about when the world and the animals were created, when the animals and - the Creator - sat together and discussed the creation of man. If stability defines success, our presence here has been, and alwyas will be, essential to the economic well-being of our homeland and those who abide here." The Klamath Tribes are serious about achieving economic self- sufficiency which means controlling our own destinies. With characteristic energy, determination and vision, and a commitment to the larger community, the Tribes have created a modern corporate identity and an efficient Tribal organization.
